Hillsong Review & Giveaway #EMPIRES AND #FLYBY @hillsongunited

This must be the week for great Christian music to be released. Yesterday I posted about a new album from Michael W. Smith and today is about the new album from Hillsong United: Empires.
Hillsong was started in 1999 & was renamed to Hillsong United in 2002. They have 20 albums and several top Christian songs. They are committed to writing songs that speak truth and connect people every where with God.

I have been enjoying this new CD with my girls. This album would probably be considered easy listening with powerful lyrics. I love the voice of Taya Smith, I could listen to her all day.

Michael W. Smith Sovereign #giveaway #SkySpillsOver #FlyBy

I'm guessing if you listen to Christian radio at all you have heard of Michael W. Smith. We have enjoyed his music for years & we were thrilled to hear he just released a new album. My copy of Sovereign is on its way to my house right now & I have one to giveaway!!

Michael W. Smith just released a video to the song SKY SPILLS OVER today. I thought it was really cool that his son was the filmmaker & that 3 of his grandkids were in it. Here is what Michael has to say about it:

"I’m really passionate about the song SKY SPILLS OVER.  It was fun creating it in the studio and I’ve been overwhelmed at the response it gets when we perform it live every night.  My son Ryan is a really talented filmmaker so I always enjoy working with him on a project.  But what made this project even more special was that 3 of my own grandkids were in the video.  This video was a lot of fun to make.  I hope people enjoy it!"

FishFlix Flight & Metamorphosis Review #hsreviews

FishFlix.com Review
My girls are always fascinated by animals. They like to learn rare facts about them & love watching movies, documentaries, or even just video clips of them. The biggest downfall to watching this type of  movies is that there is always a plug for evolution or millions of years mentioned throughout. When we were offered to review titles from FishFlix.com Christian Movies to Inspire and Entertain we were all thrilled. The Crew was offered several selections to review and we received Flight & Metamorphosis
FishFlix.com Review
Flight is a 63 minute wildlife documentary. It was filmed in North America, England, Peru, Greenland, and Antarctica. It isn't given from an evolutionary prospective. We learn about the flight, design and anatomy of birds, and get a close up look at hummingbirds, starlings, and arctic terns. Not only do we get to see fabulous footage of these birds we get to see inside the birds to get a close look at the bone structure of their wings and how they are used to fly. Each bird contains the perfect bone structure for how they must fly. It was very interesting seeing how they track Artic Terns. The data device that was attached to the birds was so small that the same bird had to be caught to gain access to the recorded data.
FishFlix.com Review
Metamorphosis is a 64 minute documentary that shows us the magnificence of the butterfly. It was filmed in the rain forests of Ecuador, Mexico's Trans-Volcanic mountain range, and leading research centers. Not only does this DVD show us the migration of the monarch butterfly we see the magic of the butterfly. Beautiful photography & video show us the wonderful transformation of the the butterfly from the egg to the chrysalis to the butterfly. Computer generated images show us the transformation of the cells in the intelligent design creature. Professionals talk of how the butterfly disproves Darwin's natural selection & explain why it is the design of an intelligent creator.

I watched both DVDs with all three of my daughters. The quality of the videos are great with beautiful footage and easy to understand explanations. I loved that we got an inside look at the bone structure of the birds and that we got to see the changes going on inside the caterpillar. It is so refreshing to hear professionals talk of the wondrous creation of these animals and disagree with Darwinian theories. My girls love hummingbirds & really enjoyed the section on them. They were very fascinated at how an adult human would need to eat 150 lbs of food per day if they had the same metabolism of a hummingbird. They even started weighing their food to see how many pounds they eat per day. It was very fascinating to see how birds wings move differently from one species to another. We have studied butterflies several times over the years and have even watched the metamorphosis with our own butterfly lore, but we have never had the opportunity to see inside the caterpillar and learn what takes place with its cell structure.
Amber's favorite part from these documentaries was seeing the place in Mexico where the monarch butterflies migrate to every year. She thought it looked cool to see all those butterflies in one place and she hopes to travel there to see it for herself someday.
Seeing inside the bird egg was very interesting to Alaina because she had never seen inside one before. That could be a good or a bad thing because now she doesn't want to eat eggs.
Delaney loved the butterflies. She loves all the different colors and designs that can emerge from the chrysalis.
Flight and Metamorphosis would make a great addition to any family, school or church library. They can be used as part of any science curriculum, unit study or just for pure enjoyment.

HomeSchool Legacy Review #hsreviews @homeschoollegac

Homeschool Legacy Review
Unit studies are a good way to break up our homeschool routine. Homeschool Legacy offers a wide variety of unit studies that require very little effort from the homeschool mom.
Homeschool Legacy Review

We received Weather On The Move digital edition to review. I downloaded mine to iBooks on my iPad & printed out worksheets. This made it very easy when we made our trip to the library. I just took my iPad so I could see the entire list.

The Once-a-Week studies are set up to be used along with your regular school work. The main part of the unit study will be completed only one day a week. The other days of the week you will complete your core curriculum and the unit study reading assignments and the family read-aloud.
Pictures of lightning taken by Delaney, snowflake made by Alaina, and creating condensation.

Weather On The Move is divided into seven weeks. There is a section on scheduling your unit study, the Boy Scout "Weather" Merit Badge information, American Heritage Girl "Young Meteorologist" Badge Information, and a chapter on getting the most out of your Once-a-Week Unit Study.

  • Week 1 ~ Meteorology
  • Week 2 ~ The Sun: Our Solar-Powered Weather Engine
  • Week 3 ~ The Atmosphere: An Ocean of Air
  • Week 4 ~ The Water Cycle
  • Week 5 ~ Frozen Precipitation
  • Week 6 ~ Clouds
  • Week 7 ~ Extreme Weather
The chapters contain a family read-aloud, family devotions, science/history, science experiments, geography, vocabulary/language, science/research, arts & crafts, and a little math along with field trip ideas. There are also links that will take you to places on the internet. The first page of each chapter lists all the supplies you will need for the week. There are some worksheets that will help you keep track of bibliographies you read, keep track of daily weather conditions, and hurricane tracking chart. Each student should create a 3 ring binder to keep track of their work. They will include their worksheets, copied poems, stories they make up using suggested idioms, and more.

Making Rain

I used Weather On The Move with all three of my girls. All three of them put together their own notebook to keep their work. They all enjoyed the study, but they all like different parts. Delaney loves to take pictures, so her favorite assignment was taking pictures. Alaina is my crafty girl, so she liked the arts & crafts sections & they all liked the experiments. My girls love the Stump Your Dad Trivia questions. Sometimes they can stump him and other times they can't. I love how easy it is to use Homeschool Legacy, the reading and supplies lists make preparation so easy. There are some of the suggested reading material that we did not own or that our library did not have, but we didn't have any trouble finding a book on the topic we needed to read about. I read aloud to my family every night before bed, so the Once-a-Week Unit Studies fit very well for our family.

The Once-a-Week Unit Studies from Homeschool Legacy are great for any family. No matter if you complete unit studies all the time or if you have never used one before. They are very user friendly & there is enough variety included for every learning style. A few years ago we used Revolutionary Ideas from Homeschool Legacy. My girls loved it & they are really enjoying Weather On The Move. They don't look at these unit studies as school work, they think they are fun & they actually retain more than if they were just reading a text book.

Homeschool Legacy Review
Homeschool Legacy offers a variety of unit studies available individually or as a series. They contain enough information to use as your main homeschool history or science when you use four or five studies. They also meet the requirements for the Boy Scouts & American Heritage Girls. The entire family can get involved in every study & there is are family game & movie night suggestions. Sharon Gibson wants you to get the most out of your unit studies by offering quality over quantity. She does not include a lot of frivolous activities to waste time, but ones that will provide a quality education while building family memories.

The Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Daytime Review #hsreviews

Real Life Press Review
I don't get to read a lot of books just for me, they are usually books for the entire family as read a aloud or they are school related. When The Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Romance by Heidi St. John first came out I wanted to read it. I loved Heidi's style of writing and enjoyed that book so much when to Crew was offered other books written by her I knew I wanted to read one, so I chose The Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Daylight

Heidi and her husband Jay offer publications that hold to biblical truth at Real Life Press. They want their readers to have self-worth, purpose and happiness that hold to the age-old truths.
Real Life Press Review
The Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Daylight is a 200 page book that helps manage our day. I received my copy of the book in E-PUB format. I sent it to iBooks in my iPad mini. It was very easy to send there & open up. The book looks really good in iBooks & it is so nice having it with me while I am out. I love how Heidi is not afraid to tell us like it is. She has been there and she knows how we are. As a homeschool mom of seven she understands how our priorities can get out of whack & that we may want to give up on homeschooling. That is probably why she starts with telling us to get our priorities in line in the introduction.
The book is divided into eight chapters.
  1. Intentional Daylight ~ Why You Need A POA, ASAP
  2. Organized Daylight ~Controlling Clutter and Reclaiming Your Space
  3. Scheduled Daylight ~ The Delight and the Dangers of Scheduling
  4. Hungry Daylight ~ Feeding Your Family Without Losing Your Mind
  5. Discouraged Daylight ~If At First You Don't Succeed....Try, Try Again
  6. Consolidated Daylight ~ Multi-Level Teaching
  7. Wasted Daylight ~ Virtual Reality
  8. Surrendered Daylight ~ Finding His Heart For Your Homeschool
This book helps us get our whole life under control and organized by being intentional with our day. We shouldn't feel like we have to deal with everything alone. Heidi encourages us to open up and be honest with our husbands and women friends when things aren't going so well.

It is really neat to see other day to day schedule from other moms. What works for one family isn't going to work for the next one. Heidi tells us that we need to be flexible in our scheduling. I learned that the hard way. My husband is on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so we have to be very flexible with our schedule.

Heidi is very real in this book. She shares stories from her own life that we can relate to. It is very encouraging to see how other people go through the same difficulties we do in our day to day lives. Heidi is right when she says we should surrender our days to God. If we have our priorities right with God first, spouse second, then our children, and lastly outside activities we can make it through the seasons of our life while continuing to homeschool.

Plumb Review & Giveaway #exhale

I love the song Need You Now by Plumb. It speaks volumes to me and I'm sure it does to many Christians. When I was offered the new album Exhale from Plumb I knew I wanted to listen to it & I was not disappointed. I love the music and her lyrics are amazing, she has a way with putting her feelings to words. Not just her feelings, but I can relate to what she says.

Exhale is her seventh album  and is full of hope for the brokenhearted. The concept for Exhale came from a sermon from Pete Wilson. His message that day was that the Church doesn't exist for itself. Believers come to church to breath in grace and truth and then go out and "exhale" that hope to those around you.

“That idea of exhaling hope hit me right away and I couldn’t get to the Notes section on my phone fast enough. I started writing the chorus of Exhale right then and there,” explains Plumb. “I have been made new by the ultimate hope, and I want to share and exhale that hope in every way I can.”
~Plumb

Exhale has 12 tracks.
Exhale
Lord I'm Ready Now
Smoke
Resurrection
Great Is Our God
My True Love
Broken Places
Faithful
Champion
Sleep Will Be Sweet
When You Walk Into The Room
Restored

I'm not the only one who enjoys the lyrics of Plumb. Tiffany Arbuckle Lee is her real name and she has sold over 500,000 albums & over two million singles. She is a songwriter, recording artist, performer and author and has co-penned songs with Mandisa, Mandy Moore, Jaci Velasques, and Natalie Grant.

A+ Interactive Math Revew #hsreviews

A+ Interactive Math Review
I have found over the years that sometimes my kids will get all their work correct on their math assignments every day, but they don't really know the concepts. That is one reason why I wanted them to try the Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan from A+ Interactive Math with them as we finished up their curriculum for the year.
A+ Interactive Math Review
The Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan is a three month subscription. There are tests and lesson plans that cover multiple topics for every grade level. Each test is timed and covers one topic. Taking the test identifies the students level in that concept and then creates an individualized lesson plan to help the student. They should follow their lesson plan to help them master the skills they need to work on. Reports can be generated to see if your student is at the grade level they need to be in.
I used the placement testing with all three of my girls. Everyone has their own login including the parent. The tests are like mini tests. They cover one topic at a time & although I didn't time my girls it seemed like it took them about 15-20 minutes for the tests. You have the option of taking all the tests first and then working on the lesson plans or taking one test and working on that lesson plan before proceeding to the next test.
In the parent account I have access to all three of my girls accounts. There is a video on how to get started, I can view their lesson plan, their reports, and review their placement tests. My screen looks just like the girls but instead of a test review button they have a test taking button. When I review their test I can see at a glance where they are. It shows how many times they attempted each test & whether they are at grade level or not. It also shows me the grade level of their skills for that topic. From there I can look at each test & see every problem.

In the reports I can generate a summary report and a progress report. I can also change the girls grade level if the tests are to hard or to easy.
As soon as the student launches their program they have the option of taking a test, working on a lesson, viewing their reports. When the student takes a test they have the option of answering the question or skipping it. That way if they haven't worked on the given topic they don't have to stress over the problem and can work on it in the lessons. Each test can be taken multiple times and the attempted number is recorded on the test launch page & reports. The student can then review the test to see which ones were correct and which ones were wrong. In the lesson area the student can work on topics to improve their skills.

My girls don't usually take tests with topics they have not worked on & they were a little frustrated when they first came to a question that they didn't know how to work. Once I explained to them that they will not know everything & if they did then we would change their grade level to a harder one they were fine with it. I gave my girls the choice of taking all the tests first before working on the lessons or completing them one at a time. They really liked that the tests didn't take a long time, but if for some reason the test was closed out in the middle of taking it you had to start over & an attempt was recorded.
The Adaptive Placement Test with Individual Lesson Plans was very easy to use. Once I set my girls accounts up they didn't have any problems logging in & figuring out where to go. After they completed a test, they wanted to look it over to see which ones they missed.
Alaina loves this progress report. It is very easy for her to see exactly what she is good at and what she needs to work on. It was very encouraging for her to look at this & made her want to try harder to get all of her people farther along the bars. These placement tests have been a wonderful tool to help identify learning gaps in my girl's math skills. I already knew where their strong & weak areas in math are, but this really helped pinpoint what exactly they need to work on.
Adaptive Placement Tests with Individual Lesson Plans can be used no matter what math curriculum you use, what grade level the student is in, or where they attend school. It is a great way to help your kids catch up or to just see what topics they have mastered.

A+ Interactive Math offers a variety of products to meet the needs of homeschool families. Besides the testing they offer curriculum on book, eBook or cd for the entire family or individual grade levels. There are several freebies available to everyone. Their two most popular ones are the Math Placement Test & the Family Math Packages. Other items you may want are the Free Software Download, a Free Single Grade Level, and a Free eBook. If you would like to try A+ Interactive there is a free one month trial
