Minion Birthday

Lisa Cay's Cakes

I always love when people want something fun & different for their birthday cake. I just loved this idea for Minion cupcakes. They are so cute in the movies Despicable Me (Blu-ray + DVD) & Despicable Me 2 (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD with UltraViolet). I made a 10" round chocolate cake and a 6" white cake and decorated them with buttercream icing, & the daisies were made out of fondant. The cupcakes were both white and chocolate and I used Twinkies for the Minions.

Crockpot Steaks

During the summer we use our grill a lot. We have a gas grill that is hooked to our gas line, so it makes it very easy to use. I will use it some during the winter unless it is very windy or really cold. I started cooking my steaks in the crockpot. It is so easy to do. I just lay my steaks in and sprinkle each layer with steak seasoning in the morning. Sometimes I add whole potatoes directly on top of my steaks & if I have them I add fresh green beans.

I usually turn my crockpot on high for 30-40 minutes and then I turn it on low for 3-4 hours. So easy & so delicious.

I have tried several different cuts of steak & they have all turned our wonderful. I really like doing this on Sunday morning, so our lunch is ready as soon as we get home from church.

Read Alouds

I have seen several people post about clearing off a bookshelf to fill with books you read throughout the year. My bookshelves could use some clearing off and rearranging, but that isn't going to happen any time soon, so I have to decided to just keep a running list on my blog. I have added the Shelfari bookshelf to my blog and I am hoping that will work. I am only going to add the books that I read aloud, but not include books that story books that Alaina still likes to read. We read a lot throughout the year, so I am hoping this bookshelf will work, if not I'll have to add something else later.

Earlier this month I read The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson out loud to my girls. This was originally published in 1845 and is about the struggles of good and evil. A young boy is over taken by evil and the young girls goes out to find him to bring him home. We see the struggles of the young girl and when the Snow Queen's snowflakes try to stop her she overcomes them by reciting the Lord's Prayer.

We just finished The Belgian Twins by Lucy F. Perkins. Jan and Marie live in Belgian during World War One. When both of their parents are taken by the Germans, they are left to fend for themselves. With no food left in the house except for a few potatoes the twins take their dog and head out in search of their parents. Their journey leads them to America with a surprising turn of events.

The Belgian Twins is the 7th book in the twin series by Lucy F. Perkins, and is our favorite so far. We have read several of them and really enjoy the look back at history in other countries. All three of my girls like them because it shows them events from a child's perspective and makes them more realistic.
