Greene Bark Press Inc. Schoolhouse Review #hsreviews

Alaina is a good reader and sometimes I forget she is only 8 & that she still likes to read pictures books. I started going through our books to get rid of some of our young books that no one reads any more & Alaina was not happy with me. She said she still likes her board books even though she can read chapter books.

When the Schoolhouse Review Crew received Look Left, Look Right, Look Left Again from Greene Bark Press Inc. I didn't tell Alaina. The day the mail came I told her the package was for her & she was so excited when she realized it was a board book. She had to read it right away!
 photo lookleftlookrightlookleftagain_zps08f68e39.jpg
Look Left, Look Right, Look Left Again is a 28 page board book. This 7" X 7" book is recommended for children ages 2-8 and can be purchased for $8.50. It was written by Ginger Pate and illustrated by Rhett Ransom Pennell.

Wally Waddlewater wants to write a letter to his grandmother. On his way to mail the letter he learns how to properly cross the street while obeying all the traffic signals. When he first starts out he only looks left & right. Mama Waddlewater grabs him just as he was about to step into moving traffic. Mama goes on to explain why Wally needs to look left, right, and left again. He also learns not to chase a ball into the street, when to wait at a traffic light & railroad tracks. After learning street safety Wally gets to cross the street by himself to visit his grandmother.
This little board book is so cute. It is very colorful & appealing to little eyes (and big ones). It explains crossing the street very clearly that younger kids can learn, but there are more words per page than what I would normally think of a board book as having. Alaina is 8 and she liked the board book, she read the book several times. I also used this opportunity to talk to her about crossing the street. We talked about how to cross the neighborhood streets and busy streets with stoplights. She already knew what was taught in the book, but when it comes to traffic safety review is good.

End of Summer Fun

It seems like there are so many fun things to do at the end of summer. Our local Historical Museum had 2 days of reenactments and our favorite part was the firing of a canon.

We also attended our state fair in Grand Island. We spent the whole day there looking at exhibits & displays. We watched the pig races, sea lion show, and ended the day watching the Toby Mac concert.

 The largest cow in Nebraska!!
Alaina made sure we watched the pig races and took plenty of pictures & video.
We had front row seats to see Toby Mac! We had purchased tickets for our section up front, but we wanted to be close, so we went in as soon as the doors opened. It was worth it because we got front row center seats, but it was a long 2 hour wait.
Toby Mac

Summer is officially over, so now we must buckle down and get ready for school.

Beauty in the Heart Schoolhouse Review #hsreviews

 photo doorpostlogo_zpsa7a5d5e4.jpg
Girls are funny, from an early age they want to be pretty. They like to fuss with their hair, wear the right clothes & shoes just to be beautiful. I have never put a lot of focus on my girls appearance. Yes, they have to be neat, and dress appropriately, but I have never taught them to spend hours on their appearance. I have tried to teach them that beauty comes from within and that God made them the way he wants them to be. We have been reviewing Beauty in the Heart that teaches this very thing.

The Schoolhouse Review Crew were offered Beauty in the Heart: A study of Godly Beauty for Young Women, and You Are Strong: A Study of Godly Strength for Young Men from Doorposts. Since I have 3 girls left at home we received Beauty in the Heart.

 photo BeautyCover_zpsd1ccc789.jpg
Beauty in the Heart: A Study of Godly Beauty for Young Women is a 8 1/2 X 11, 128 page paperback book or PDF ebook. This book is recommended for girls ages 12 and up, wives, and mothers. It is scheduled to be released on August 29, 2013 for $14.00, and if you order before August 31, 2013 you can get a free PDF ebook with your purchase.

Beauty in the Heart is divided into 10 chapters with an introduction and alternate questions for young men. It is primarily for women, but young men will benefit from it in order to seek a godly beautiful wife. Kings James Version of the bible have been used within the book & a concordance will be helpful.

  • Introduction
  • Chapter 1 ~ Beauty in Submission: An Inductive Study in 1 Peter
  • Chapter 2 ~ Beauty in the Heart: A Verse Study on 1 Peter 3:3-4
  • Chapter 3 ~ Beauty in Trusting God: A Character Study of Sarah
  • Chapter 4 ~ Beauty in Humility: A Book Study of Esther
  • Chapter 5 ~ Beauty in Modesty: A Verse Study of 1 Timothy 2:9-10
  • Chapter 6 ~ Beauty in Serving: A Word of Topical Study
  • Chapter 7 ~ Beauty without Discretion: A Verse Study of Proverbs 11:22
  • Chapter 8 ~ Beauty in Crisis: A Chapter Study of 1 Samuel 25
  • Chapter 9 ~ Beauty in the Gates: A Book Study of Ruth
  • Chapter 10 ~Beauty in Review
  • Alternate Questions for Young Men
Each of the nine studies include daily assignments that last 5 to 20 minutes a day. You may complete more than one daily lesson at a time or there are additional study ideas that can make the studies last longer.

Not only do you learn about Biblical beauty you will also learn how to study the bible. It instructs you what to look for within a chapter of the bible and mark certain key items in different colors. The questions include observations, keywords, verse studies, application, Greek word studies and more. The book has the main text and questions on each page with further study options included on some pages in a grey box.

I used this with all three of my girls ages 8, 11, & 12. We took turns reading the suggested scripture and the rest of us would follow along in our own bible. We didn't write in the book, but we discussed the questions out loud. We used notebook paper for anything I wanted the girls to write on their own. I like to use New American Standard version of the bible, so that is what my girls have too. The NAS bible worked fine with the study. I have used the Strong's Concordance to look up Greek words before for our bible study time, but I haven't had the girls look up their own words until now and Amber & Delaney both enjoy looking them up.

Pam does an great job with this Bible study, the scriptures were very good to portray godly beauty. She does not include opinions or doctrine, but sticks with bible verses and word studies.

Pam Forster is the author of Beauty in the Heart. She has loved studying the bibles since she was a teenager, and most of her books came from her own personal Bible study. She is a veteran homeschool mom of 6 who enjoys keeping up with her children and grandchildren.

Doorposts provides Bible-based parenting and character training materials. Their goal is to provide parents with tools to make their job of raising godly children easier. They offer bible study materials for husbands & fathers, wives & mothers, boys, girls, and the family.

If you want yourself and your daughters to have beauty in their hearts or if you want the men in your family to have godly strength then Beauty in the Heart or You Are Strong would make a perfect addition to your bible study.

Alone Yet Not Alone Review & Giveaway

I read to my family every night before bed, we love to read mysteries and historical fiction. I am always on the lookout for good quality historical fiction that we can learn from, but also enjoy. I just finished reading Alone Yet Not Alone to my family and it was a big hit.

Alone Yet Not Alone is about a the Leininger family living in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania in 1755. They had so much to be thankful for until their family was torn apart in the Penn's Creek Massacre. While the mom and one brother are gone for a day Indians visit the cabin. The two sisters, Barbara & Regina were carried away and the father & the other brother were killed by the Allegheny warriors. Barbara constantly tells Regina to not loose her faith and that no matter where they are they are never alone. Their faith is further tested when they are separated from one another. The story is from Babara's perspective and when she is about to be forced into marrying an Indian, she decided to escape with 3 other white captives. Once they find the Redcoats years later, the only way they are recognized as not being Indians is because Barbara talks in her native German language. After being reunited with her mother & brother they eventually find Regina only by singing a song from their youth, Alone Yet Not Alone.

Tracy Leininger Craven loves history and real-life stories. She retells the true story of Barbara and Regina that she had heard for years from her grandmother. She includes a lot of historical details of this real family that is caught in the cross fire of the French and Indian War.

MacPhail Center For Music Schoolhouse Review #hsreviews #guitarlessons @macphailmusic

Amber is a very self motivated child, if she decides she wants to do something she will figure it out! She has been playing piano for about 5 years, she is teaching herself how to play the ukulele and then she teaches her sisters. She taught herself to play the flute with a little help from a friend, and then she wanted a guitar. For her 12th birthday we bought her a guitar, and she has been working on some chords and figuring out some songs. Oh, I almost forgot she also has a mandolin that she likes to play around with.

When we first heard that the Review Crew was going to review music lessons with the MacPhail Center for Music Amber was thrilled. Every day and sometimes a couple times a day she would ask me if we were picked to review it. The hard part for her was choosing what instrument she wanted lessons on.
MacPhail Music logo photo McPhailmusiclogo_zps8577c152.jpg
The MacPhail Center for Music offers music classes and private lessons for every age starting as young as six months old. They serve more than 10,000 students and clients with half of their students from community partnerships in schools, preschools, nursing homes and hospitals. MacPhail hosts 450 events and concerts throughout the year open to everyone. They have 5 locations and now offer lessons online for piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, harp, flute, clarinet, trumpet, low brass, saxophone, and percussion.

The online lessons are done through Skype and you must have high speed internet for the best quality sound and video. I already had the latest version of Skype on our computer and getting ready for our lessons was very easy. I received a Student Interest Form to fill out for Amber. It asked when we would be available for our classes and basic information about Amber's music ability and her music interests. This information is used to help match her with a teacher and could take 10-14 days. During this time we scheduled a time to check our equipment with an online manager. During our call she wanted to make sure our microphone, speakers, and video were in adequate working order. She had Amber tell her a little about herself and play a song on her guitar. Our placement specialist contacted us with our instructors name and 4 time slots that were marked on Amber's Student Interest Form. We actually had a conflict with one of our lesson times, but they were very accommodating and changed that lesson to a time slot that would work for us.

We received 4  30-minute online lessons from MacPhail and Amber chose to take them for her guitar. She was assigned lessons with Randy and they worked on:

  • Lesson 1 ~ Randy asked Amber a lot of questions to see what she already knew about the guitar. He went over the parts of the guitar, string names, finger names, notes, and tuning. He also asked her what her favorite song is and Randy looked it up on Youtube, so he could hear it. He could play right along with the song and then went over the first three chords in the introduction of the song. He gave Amber some chord patterns to work on for homework, he also asked her to make a list of her favorite songs and artists.
  • Lesson 2 ~ During this lesson Randy had Amber play her homework & he corrected what she had wrong. The song Amber chose in lesson 1 uses the Kapo so Randy went over using it and tuning her guitar with it. He had Amber play the chord progression to the intro of the song & then he added more chords for her homework.
  • Lesson 3 ~ They continued to work on the song adding the rest of the song. Amber tends to hold the neck of the guitar down low, so Randy covered the best way to hold the guitar & pick to get the best sound.
  • Lesson 4 ~ Since this was Amber's last lesson Randy showed her where to find guitar music of about every song you can think of that she would be able to play with the chords she knows. He offered tips on how to practice, like looking for similarities in the chords that are in a song she is working on and that she should practice new chords with the chord that comes before and after it to get them where she can play them smoothly.
When Amber was finished with her lessons she had learned to play a complete song. She still plays it slower than it should be, but with a little more practice she will have it perfect. I was really surprised at how much she learned in just 4 lessons. Randy is a very good teacher, Amber understood everything he had her do & he would correct her when she needed it. The sound & video quality using Skype was very good and it was just like having a private music lesson.

I enjoyed my guitar lessons, and I learned a lot in just 4 lessons. Randy was friendly and a very good guitar player. He taught me the parts of my guitar, notes, chords, how to hold the guitar & the pick correctly and a whole song. He helped me improve my playing and told me how I could make the most of my practice time.
~ Amber, age 12

In the Hands of a Child Schoolhouse Review #hsreviews

 photo handsofachildlogo_zps7221e2e2.jpg
In the Hands of a Child has a goal to provide quality lapbooking materials to all educators while serving homeschool families and classroom teachers looking for an easier way to put laughter and learning together in the hands of their children.

Two homeschooling moms, Kimm Bellotto and Niki McNeil, met in an online homeschool email group and found that they both loved lapbooks and wanted an easier way for homeschool moms to find necessary items to complete them. They published their first unit, Plant in November 2002. In 2005 Katie joined their group and they now have units that cover bible, history, math, science, and so much more.

The Schoolhouse Review Crew were offered several units to review and since we are thinking about going to see the Grand Canyon soon, I decided we should work on the National Parks Project Pack.
The National Parks Project Pack is recommended for children in Grades 4-8. It comes with a 2 downloadable files. One file is for the Student and the other is a Teacher's Manual and purchased for $12.00. A Project Pack contains both the activities and the lesson plans.

This project covers National Parks, the National Park Services, several specific National Parks, and contains lists of additional reading. The Student book is 48 pages and the Teacher's Manual is 60 pages long. Directions on how to create the lapbook and photos of the finished project are also included. Some of the activities include vocabulary words, hiking supply lists, how to protect our National Parks. For each National Park covered we learn some history, geography, science, things to do there, and the number of visitors per year.

My girls are in the 4th, 7th, & 8th grade, they really enjoy making lapbooks, it gives them some creative outlet. I like In the Hands of a Child because all the work is done for me. I also like that they include ideas how to make some activities harder for older students. That way I know all three of my girls are learning and still having fun.

Lapbooks are made out of filling folders that are folded and sometimes glued together. The directions in the National Parks Project Pack is very easy to understand and implement even if you have never completed one before.

Family Hope Center Schoolhouse Review

   photo 182266_202676429747109_4948289_n_zpsa1ed36ca.jpg
The Family Hope Center helps children with special needs and developmental delays no matter how mild or profound. They believe every child is unique and they empower parents to heal their children. The Family Hope Center evaluates every child and trains the parents to be the child's in-home engineer. By helping parents understand how the brain grows and develops, the treatments will be effective no matter what caused the child's condition.

 photo CBD-DCover_zps23501872.gif
I received Understanding Child Brain Development by Matthew & Carol Newell. This is an interactive seminar to help children develop to their fullest potential by helping the parents understand their children better. This seminar is about 2 hours long and can be ordered through Institute for Excellence in Writing for $19.00.

A free ebook is a available to go along with Understanding Child Brain Development. The seminar can be viewed in 6 languages and includes these chapters:

  • Introduction by Andrew Pudewa
  • Matthew & Carol Newell, The Family Hope Center
  • Child Brain Development-Who's Really Driving
  • Why Do Brain Dysfunctions Still Exist?
  • The Family Hope Center
  • The Magnificent Brain
  • The Sense of Smell
  • Sense of Smells in Newborns
  • The Pons
  • The Mid-Brain: Creeping
  • The Cortex
  • Diagnosis/Treatment at The Family Hope Center
  • Physiology vs. Pathology
  • Integrated Therapy
  • Water and Its Effect on the Human Body

A large portion of the seminar focuses on the brain and how each section controls a specific behavior. Matthew goes over how certain parts of the brain develop with milestones achieved as early as the birth of the infant. They want to create wellness in everyone and the healing includes:

  • Understanding the children-and work together
  • Nutrition
  • Water
  • Food
  • Eliminating EMF's - microwaves, gameboys, computer games, videogames, TV
  • Sunshine.

I have watched the seminar several time and I'll admit some of it goes over my head. I find it very interesting how laying an infant on their stomach instead of their backs and how crawling can change how their brain develops and can affect the child later. I am very grateful that all of my children are "normal". Although Matthew teaches that everyone without a perfect brain can use wellness. All four of my girls scooted instead of crawling, so I have been trying to notice things in their development that this could have affected & haven't come up with any yet. If you are interested in how the brain develops or if you have a child that needs wellness you might find this seminar helpful.

I also received Stories of Family Hope DVD. This is stories from parents of children who have experienced victory.

  • Chapter 1 ADD/ADHD ~ 2 families tell their inspiring stories of hope and success after beginning their program. One family's child was labeled with ADD/OCD and the other with ADD/ADHD.
  • Chapter 2 Cerebral Palsy ~ 2 families talk about their journey of frustration to hope and the dramatic progress their children have made since attending the seminar and implementing a program.
  • Chapter 3 Down Syndrome ~ Hannah was diagnosed with down syndrome as an infant. She is now making progress toward leading a normal life.
  • Chapter 4 Autism ~ A documentary of 2 young boys that were diagnosed with Autism. Their parents tell how the boys' lives are dramatically improved by their experience.

The Family Hope Center believes that the parents can become the best engineer for their child because of their love for them & their determination to see them succeed. The success stories prove that their program has been very beneficial to families who face difficulties with their children.

Matthew & Carol Newell are the directors of the Family Hope Center and they have been helping special needs children and their families for over 25 years. Matthew deals primarily with children's physical development while Carol focuses on the sensory side. They have had numerous awards accredited to them over the years and have raised a special needs child.

To order Understanding Child Brain Development you can call 610-397-1737 or visit Excellence In Writing.

Live Butterfly Garden Post 2 #HomeSchool #Butterfly

All 5 of our caterpillars have emerged from their chrysalis.

We received our caterpillars a week and a half ago. All 5 of them formed their chrysalis on the lid of the cup. We watched 4 of them & the fifth one formed while we were out of town. When we got home one of them had fallen to the bottom of the cup. We carefully removed the lid & the paper from the inside to pin in our cage. We didn't know if the one on the bottom of the cup was dead or not, so we decided to sit the cup inside our net just in case. We placed a small stick in our cup in case, so our butterfly could hold onto it so his wings could dry if he emerged.

Amber actually got up Wednesday, August 14th before everyone else & our first butterfly had emerged. They wanted to be able to watch one of them, so they were continually checking the chrysalises for any changes. Thursday I went to lunch with some homeschool moms and as soon as I arrived at the restaurant the girls were calling. They were so excited they got to watch one emerge & they caught it on video. This was the fourth butterfly & the only one left was the one on the bottom of the cup. On Friday, August 16th the one that had fallen emerged.

You can tell my girls are excited!!!

We now have 5 Painted Lady Butterflies that we will be releasing in a couple of days.

Notgrass America the Beautiful Schoolhouse Review #hsreviews

 photo notgrass_logo_zps18b23376.jpg
We are very eclectic in our school. I have purchased curriculum and I have pieced together my own, we have used text books, lapbooks, notebooks, workbooks, you name it we have probably tried it. It is a lot easier to purchase what I want, but sometimes I feel like I want to add more to it. We just started using America the Beautiful from Notgrass Company and it is has everything I would want in a history curriculum.
 IMG_2127
American the Beautiful covers American history, geography, and literature for children ages 10-14. This complete one-year course written by Charlene Notgrass can be purchased for $99.95.  Six books are included in this curriculum:
There are two additional workbooks that can be purchased:
  • America the Beautiful Student Workbook ~ This book is spiral bound with 150 pages and is $11.95. It was written by Mary Evelyn McCurdy and is recommended for students in the 5 & 6 grade. Each lesson has one page of activities including crossword puzzles, matching,  fill in the blank, scrambled words, codes, drawing assignments, and more.
  • America the Beautiful Lesson Review ~ This Spiral bound book has a 100 pages and is $9.95. It is recommended for 7 & 8 grade students and was written by Mary Evelyn McCurdy. It includes review questions and a quiz for each lesson.
photo (29)
Literature is assigned in this curriculum and starts in Unit 4. There are 10 books to read throughout the year.
  • The Sign of the Beaver
  • Amos Fortune: Free Man
  • Brady
  • Bound for Oregon
  • Across Five Aprils
  • Little Town on the Prairie
  • All-Of-A-Kind-Family
  • Blue Willow
  • Homer Price
  • Katy
There is a lot included in this curriculum, but it is not overwhelming. The entire program is explained in the introduction. There are 5 types of lessons:
  • Our American Story ~ Covers major events in the time periods.
  • God’s Wonders ~ Describes the amazing creation God placed in America.
  • An American Landmark ~ Covers important sights in American history.
  • An American Biography ~ Focuses on people who lived in each time.
  • Daily Life ~ Tells how people worked & lived during their time.
Each of the 30 Units contain 5 lessons and can be completed in one year. After reading each lesson in America the Beautiful there are activities to be completed. This is where you are told what to read out of We the People, what pages to complete in the Lesson Review, Student Workbook, Timeline, Maps, and vocabulary & writing assignments to include in a 3 ring binder. At the end of each Unit there is a family activity for everyone to enjoy.
 DSC04111DSC04112
Navajo Flatbread ~ A Family Project

I am using this curriculum with all three of my girls ages 8, 11, & 12. We set up a 3-ring binder for all three of them & after using this for a couple of days I decided to order additional workbooks. I have been reading the text out loud to the girls and then they can complete their activities. I wanted Amber & Delaney to use the Lesson Review workbooks and Alaina was going to use the Student Workbook, but Amber & Delaney wanted to use the Student Workbook too because they love puzzles.
IMG_2128
America the Beautiful looks like a textbook, but the text is written in a way that is very engaging to us all. The activities are very well rounded, and include reading assignments, writing assignments, vocabulary words, and bible verses. The Family Activity directions are in the back of the book and include menus, recipes, games, and crafts.
I love the timeline, because it helps my girls to see things in order & they love looking back through their entries. I’ll admit we have tried to keep a timeline in the past & will stray away from it from time to time. This workbook makes it easy to keep up with it & it is a great way to review without really trying.

Some of the Maps in the workbook are used with several lessons and some are used with just one. We have a wall map of the world & the United States hanging in our school room, so we can easily point out places when we read about them. The Maps workbook is making it easier for the kids to find places on our wall maps.

Charlene Notgrass is a 20 year homeschool veteran that wants to encourage homeschool moms. She has written several books and one of them is the Draw to Learn series.  Reviews from this series can be read on the Crew Blog.

America the Beautiful gives you the joy of using living books, notebooking, map skills, and activities with the ease of textbook. It is easy to use, very thorough and the kids are learning and enjoying themselves while they do.

Live Butterfly Garden #HomeSchool #Butterfly

DSC04079

I ordered some things we needed for school from Amazon & I didn’t tell the girls that I included a Live Butterfly Garden. They were so excited when they opened the box & saw what was inside.
The Butterfly Garden I purchased came with a certificate to order a cup with 5 live caterpillars for only $5.00. Of course the girls made me get online and order them that night so they would get here faster.
DSC04077

It only took about a week to get our caterpillars and all 5 of them arrived alive.
DSC04080

They watched their caterpillars for along time & they are very excited & impatient waiting for their butterflies.
DSC04082

Now we just have to sit our caterpillars somewhere that we wont have to move them & wait for them to turn into chrysalides.

You can view 4 of the 66 cards free.

We worked on our study guides together & I wanted to include Amber too even though she didn’t have  her own workbook. Amber read the selected scripture out loud to us all & then Delaney & Alaina worked on their worksheets. Amber helped Alaina if she had any trouble with her pages. We all went over the Bible Book Summary Cards together. We would discuss the new card & review any of the previous cards together.

Both student levels worked very well together & Amber would have liked to have her own even though she is older. The worksheets are arranged in a fun way that really appealed to my kids. They loved all the hand drawn pictures, maps, and timelines. The pictures on the Summary Cards and in the worksheets really help to remember key items from the bible. The Bible Book Summary Cards are a great way to remember key facts of each book of the bible & we will use them for years to come.

The Bible Study Guide For All Ages can easily be used with multiple grades & it would be great for a Sunday School class.
