BrainFood Learning makes The Fascinating World of DVDs. The company was started when 2 parents wanted something with stimulating and interesting content that would educate as well as entertain their children. They couldn't find what they were looking for, so they started their own company.

They currently have 4 DVD titles available. The Fascinating World of Birds, The Fascinating World of Mammals, The Fascinating World of Insects, and MLB Showdown Starter. The Schoolhouse Review Crew were offered all three of The Fascinating World of DVDs, and we received The Fascinating World of Birds.

The Fascinating World of Birds is a 44 minute DVD and can be purchased for $14.99. It is recommended for all ages and features ostrich, penguin, goose, owl, hummingbird, woodpecker, macaw, pelican, American Robin, and eagle. It is an educational tool that can be used at home or in schools. The DVD can be viewed straight through all the birds, or you may choose which bird to watch from the index.

Just this past week BrainFood has come out with lesson plans that include activities to go along with all three of The Fascinating World of DVDs. I printed out the lesson plan for the Bird video and it contains worksheets that cover reading, writing, and science. The lesson plans are free to download from BrainFood.

When we first received our DVD my 11 & 12 year old girls were at youth camp. Alaina (age 8) wanted to watch The Fascinating World of Birds right away & then when the other girls got home we watched the DVD together. The main information is given very clearly by a lady. There are new vocabulary words that appear throughout the DVD, the words and the definitions are given by a boy.  We learned about some things that are common to all birds such as their bones, feathers, and why they have wings. We are then shown each of the different birds and what makes them unique.

Do you know the only bird that flies backward?
Do you know why an ostrich sticks his head in the sand?
What bird can you hear from a mile away?

There was a lot of details about the birds that we didn't know & this DVD makes a great addition to our science curriculum. 4 review sections are included on the DVD & they are great to use with a range of kids. The simpler questions identify what the bird is called & get harder from there.

  • Review 1 ~ Review Your Bird
  • Review 2 ~ Features of a Bird
  • Review 3 ~ Review Bird Facts
  • Review 4~ Review the Big Words

I think the lesson plan adds to the learning experience of the video. We are studying Zoology this year in school & the individual bird index will make it easy to watch just the bird we are learning about.

The best part is my girls enjoyed watching The Fascinating World of Birds and have watched the DVD several times. I love when we find educational material & my girls view it as entertainment.

Members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew also received Insects & Mammal DVDs from BrainFood Learning. Sail over to the Crew Blog to read those reviews.
