My girls love art, they are always drawing, coloring, and painting. They love to try new techniques and projects whenever they can. Our newest art review is Pointillism Fruit from See the Light.

Pointillism Fruit is one of the projects from Pat Kneepley's Art Projects. There are 9 projects that focus on famous artists. Each Art Project DVD contains 4 lessons that cover Art History, Art Elements, and Art Principles. The Art Project DVDs can be purchased individually for $14.99 or all 9 can be purchased together for $99.99.

The Art Projects Pointillism Fruit for kids age 10+ lasts 1 1/2 hours and has 4 lessons:

  • Intro to Seurat's Impressionist Style: Color Theory and Initial Drawing
  • Laying Down Base Color: Implementing Pointillism
  • Creating Highlight and Shadow: Optical Color Mixing
  • Filling In The Details: Finished Still Life
And covers:
  • Art History ~ Pointillism, Impressionism, George Seurat
  • Art Elements ~ Color, Value, Form
  • Art Principles ~ Optical Mixing, Pointillism Technique
The materials for this art project are all inexpensive and common. We needed poster board, pure acrylic paints, 3 pieces of fruit, 50 cotton swabs, paper towels, paper plates, pencil, and eraser. We already had all of our supplies and the girls wanted to get started right away.

All three of my girls ages 8, 11, & 12 worked through the DVD lessons together. My 8 & 11 year old enjoyed it the most. They watched each DVD lesson and then completed the work. Normally I work through any art projects with the girls, but I sat out on this one and they knew exactly what to do. All 4 lessons last 1 1/2 hours but the student needs to finish each lesson before moving on. It probably took my girls about 4 hours to complete the entire project.

We used the Basics DVD lessons 1-4 with Pat Kneeply in the past and Pointillism Fruit is just as good as that one. We love her teaching and you can tell that she is very passionate about art and her job. My 20 year old daughter is very artsy, and I feel I could have taught my younger girls pointillism, but they would have missed out on a lot. I love that Pat explains how the colored points within the picture work together and when and how this was first noticed. We were very impressed with the art work that we were shown in the lesson and the history that we learned.

Amber is my 12 year old and she really enjoyed working with pointillism. She liked her fruit that she painted, but she didn't really like how fat her dots were with the cotton swabs. She decided to use pointillism with markers. She went outside and found some flowers in our yard to draw. She liked how it turned out so well that she entered it in our local homeschool art show and she was very happy to get a 1st Place Ribbon.

Pat Kneeply is the teacher on the DVDs and she has been drawing and painting since she was young enough to hold a crayon. She has a degree in Art Education and teaches children in the Los Angeles area.

Members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew received 10 different DVD lessons from See the Light. Sail over to the Crew Blog to read about those lessons.
