Day 5 of Kids in the Kitchen

Some kids like to be in the kitchen more than others. One way to get children involved is to enter a contest. My girls enjoy entering a local recipe contest every year. They love seeing their name in the paper if they are one of the finalist.

Amber who is 11 likes to be in the kitchen only when she wants to be. She likes to cook things by herself and she will kick me out of the kitchen. I figure we can eat anything once! Last year at the recipe contest she created her own recipe, made it herself, and even set up her display without help. She has followed recipes completely on her own. She has also experimented with some of my recipes to make them better.
Amber made Beef and Veggie Chow Mein by herself.
She made up this Crustless Apple Pumpkin dessert recipe for the recipe contest here in town.

Amber also has a love for cheese, she can eat cheese with anything, and she is figuring out what kind of cheese goes better with different types of food. She was in the mood for breadsticks one day & decided to make her own. So she took my breadstick recipe and jazzed it up a bit. She added Italian Seasoning, Parmesan, Romano, & Asiago cheese.

1 package of yeast
1 1/3 cups warm water
3-3 1/2 cups flour
3 Tablespoons oil
1 Tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon salt
Amber added:
1 Tablespoon Italian Seasoning
1/4 cup fresh grated Asiago, Romano, & Parmesan cheese
Use Asiago, Romano, & Parmesan cheese to sprinkle breadsticks while still hot.

Heat oven to 400°. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add & stir together one cup of flour and the rest of the ingredients. Stir in enough flour until soft dough forms (it will be very soft). Let rise for 45 min. Turn dough on greased surface and separate into about 24 equal parts. Roll & shape each ball into a 6" stick. Place on greased cookie sheet & bake for 15 minutes. Immediately brush with butter and sprinkle with cheese.

I can't believe that the 5 Days of Blogging with the Homeschool Crew is over. This week has gone by fast & I have enjoyed reading what others had to say. There were a few other blogs who had a food related theme. Debra blogged about 5 Days of Living Out of My Pantry, Laura's was 5 Days of Frugal Eating, Ozark Ramblings blogged about 5 Days of Freezer Cooking, Our Homeschool Studio wrote about 5 Days of Eating Around the World, and if you or someone you know has food allergies you might want to check out 5 Days of Food Allergies by Cristi.
