ZGuide to Kit Kitteredge

The American Girls are a big hit at our house, so when we were offered to review the ZGuide for the Kit Kittredge DVD I knew we would like it. I was surprised at how much we learned about the Great Depression.

The ZGuide is an ebook from Zeezok Publishing that helps you incorporate media into your curriculum. Each ZGuide contains a topic overview, movie synopsis, and ten learning activities to help you study the movie. It is recommended that you answer the movie review questions while watching the DVD. This forces you to become an active learner instead of a passive observer. Every ZGuide contains a "hand-on" activity to develop the student's artistic talents. The "Worldview Activity"  asks the student to evaluate the actors actions and attitudes to help them think critically. "The Filmmaker's Art" focuses on the movie-making techniques and their effects on the viewer. "For Family Discussion" everyone in the family can contribute their thoughts. The goal of the ZGuide is to teach the viewer to think critically.

The ZGuide to the movies for Kit Kitteredge is recommended for junior high level. I used it with my 4th & 5th graders. The guide is scheduled to last 5 days and we actually used it the way it was suggested.
  • Day 1 we read the Topic Overview and the Movie Synopsis before we viewed the DVD. We answered the 25 Movie Review Questions during the movie. My girls only missed a couple of them, so we went back to that section of the movie and watched it again. Then we went online and read some other articles on the Great Depression to answer the questions in Activity 2.
  • Day 2 was my girls favorite part of the study. They were given some hobo symbols to look up online to break the code. They wrote each other notes using the hobo language and also wrote it all over our sidewalk with chalk. We also completed the vocabulary words associated with the Great Depression.
  • Day 3 We wrote a newspaper article about something from the Depression. We also researched fashion for this time period.
  • Day 4 we completed the Who Am I? activity. We were given 17 descriptions of people and we had to see if we remembered who they were. We also talked about irony and foreshadowing and were given several quotes from the movie for us to decide which it was.
  • Day 5 we discussed pride and prejudice from the 1930s. The last activity was about the lighting, irony, music, and color used the movie and the perception it gives the viewer. We also went over the family discussions questions and watched the movie again.
This was the first movie guide we have used & it forced us to notice other things in the movie besides the main characters and theme of the movie. The ZGuide for Kit Kitteredge is available from Zeezok Publishing for $12.99. The Kit Kittredge DVD is also available for $15.98. They also sell many more ZGuides to other movies.

Zeezok Publishing was new to me when I received my ZGuide to the movies. This company was established in 2003 and strive to provide quality literature and educational books to train the next generation. They believe that "It is better to build children than to repair men." They want to develop love for God and country in your family.

There were several different ZGuides reviewed by 100 TOS Crew members, so stop on over and find one that you would like to read more about.

As a member of TOS Crew I received the Kit Kitteredge ZGuide to use with my children in exchange for my review of this item.
